Reporter comment USDA

As filed

Based on limited comparisons with last week, feeder steers and heifers under 600 lbs 6.00-12.00 lower. Weights over 600 lbs sold with a lower undertone but with no price trend available. Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 lower. Demand moderate. Supply light. The cattle market is currently under pressure from both directions with sharply higher feed costs lowering the value of feeders while it is feared that record high fuel prices could soak up potential beef buying dollars and soften fed cattle demand. The feeder index, based on a 800 lb steer, has lost nearly 6.00/cwt over the past week. The feedlot trade began Tuesday at prices 2.00/cwt lower.
