Reporter comment USDA

As filed

Compared to last week's light test, steers and heifers sold steady to firm as the bigger groups of quality calves pushed some price ranges higher. Demand was moderate to good for a moderate supply that featured some attractive calves and a couple groups of yearling heifers. Cattle were down hard on the board in anticipation of a bearish cattle on feed report Friday and corn posting gains on Thursday. Despite lower total numbers of cattle, packers have backed off on the weekly slaughter rates here late summer and fall when beef sales have been sluggish, leaving more cattle still in the feedyard. Slaughter cows sold 3.00-6.00 lower.
