Reporter comment USDA

As filed

Compared to last week, slaughter cows were steady to 2.00 higher and slaughter bulls were steady to weak. Demand was good on a moderate supply with replacement cattle outnumbering slaughter animals. Warmer temperatures and sunshine have increased demand for replacement and stocker cattle. With the inventory of cows the lowest in 73 years, it's going to take a while until we see inventories getting back to normal. With feeder heifers selling at record prices, to go to feedlots, it makes it difficult to forgo that income to build herds back. The USDA's Cold Storage Report, released yesterday, reported that the total pounds of beef in freezers were down 6 percent from the previous month and down 2 percent from last year.
