Compared to the last sale two weeks ago, steers and heifers sold weak to 5.00 lower. Slaughter cows 3.00 to 4.00 higher with some lean cows up to 7.00 higher. A couple weights of cattle did buck the overall trend and trade higher, 600-650 lb steers bringing fully 5.00 to 6.00 more and some 700-725 lb steers that worked their way higher throughout the day to tack on 1.00 to 3.00 by the end of the sale. Mostly long time weaned calves on offer with only a handful of consignments of true yearlings available. Daily slaughter numbers are creeping upwards early this week, although very slowly, with no expectation that any plants will be running at capacity for many months to come. It's going to take a lot longer to slug through the backlog of finished cattle than it has to create it and achieving currency will likely define every facet of the beef sector for the remainder of the year. Fat cattle trade was reported Wednesday from $95 to $110/cwt live, a price spread absolutely unheard of and unexplainable as well. Supply moderate to heavy, demand moderate.
